LMS Pilgrimages

LATIN MASS SOCIETY PILGRIMAGES

The ancient devotional practice of the pilgrimage goes back centuries and can be undertaken for a variety of pious reasons: as penance for our sins, as an act of devotion to God or one of His Saints, for a particular intention, in thanks for favours granted. Pilgrimages are also public witnesses to the Catholic Faith, never more important than now, when public expressions of Christianity are under sustained attack by secular authorities.

The LMS organises several pilgrimages each year around England and Wales, and abroad, and you are encouraged to take part in one or more of these. You don't have to be a member of the LMS to take part! Below are the pilgrimages we have planned at the moment.

.

CHARTRES PILGRIMAGE

Venue: Meets at Westminster Cathedral, London for departure to Paris, France.

Date: Friday, 6 to Tuesday, 10 June 2016

Not so much an event as an institution! Around 10,000 people participate in the annual Paris to Chartres Pilgrimage each Pentecost weekend, walking the 70 miles in three days, camping overnight to arrive for Mass in Chartres Cathedral.

This year the British Chapter of the pilgrimage will be embarking on its 21st trip to France and the LMS is subsidising the cost for 15 young people (aged 18-35). Full details about the sponsorship are available here.

One of the highlights of the pilgrimage is Benediction and Exposition on the second night. You are conscious of the intensity of the prayer: people take big intentions to Chartres!

It is, above all, a joyous experience. It is impossible to describe the effect of the prayers and songs, the camaraderie and sense of purpose, over three days. The sight of Chartres Cathedral on the last day, appearing on the horizon and growing gradually larger, is quite something. This is, of course, perhaps the greatest achievement of Medieval architecture in the world.

Pilgrimage to York in honour of St Margaret Clitherow and the York Martyrs

Venue: St Wilfrid’s, Duncombe Place YORK YO1 7EF

Date: Around Saturday, 29 March 2016

Details: Our annual pilgrimage to this beautiful city and site of so many Catholic martyrdoms (York holds the honour of having witnessed more martyrdoms for the Catholic Faith than any other English city or town).
